Nutrition in Hempstead School District

New cafeteria programs are being offered to provide healthier food choices for students in schools. Nassau News takes a look at what might be done to improve nutrition in the area's elementary schools.

In today’s society there is an epidemicof child obesity. Children are not getting proper nutrition, which could lead to more severe health problems later in life. Healthy eating needs to be encouraged through government, the media, at home, and at school. School districts need to do a better job improving the nutritional value of food being served in the school cafeteriaand the classroom. Surveys find that the quality of food in cafeterias in not good enough. For this reason the Food and Nutrition Service, along with other companies, have created new cafeteria programs that provide healthier food choices for students.
