Thrifty Threads in Hempstead at Josie's

By Stacey Englander

Why is it that many people decide to shop at the thrift store over, say, shopping at Nordstrom’s? Well, it could be because you can get the same quality brands at the thrift store as you can at Nordstrom’s -- for close to nothing. For the same price you pay for one shirt at Nordstrom’s, you can purchase a whole outfit (including shoes) at the thrift store.

Thrift stores have been around for a long time and they have been known for being around for the poor. Places such as the Salvation Army were known for selling cheap clothes to help the poor. But now, more and more people are seeing the benefits of budget shopping.

Josie’s on Fulton Avenue has been around for a few years and the owner says that she is proud of what she has created. Not just for the poor, it’s for the smart because they know the bargain they are getting. There’s a thrill in finding something for $5 when you saw it for 50 in the store,” she told Nassau News.

The problem is that many people can’t afford to shop at places such as Nordstrom’s and Bloomingdale's so they are not only forced to shop at Josie’s but are more willing to. But what people don’t know is what kind of quality you can get at a thrift store such as Josie’s.

While shopping around Josie’s, I was able to find a lot of name brands for a very low price. I found shirts from the Gap for prices you would never believe. I was able to pick out an outfit for under the budget of $20. When shopping at Nordstrom’s, it was almost impossible to find a shirt under $20.

People don’t realize how beneficial shopping at thrift stores can be. In the future I believe that shopping at thrift stores will become more and more popular. I believe that people just don’t realize what they are missing when they pass up the opportunity to shop there.
