The New York Jets are leaving their training camp at Hofstra University, where they have been for over thirty years. The Jets are officially leaving after training season in 2008. This means that by September, the Jets will be in their new training facility in New Jersey, leaving local businesses in Hempstead nervous about how the move will negatively affect their businesses.
Antonio Iadevia, the general manager of Coliseum Caterers shed some insight to why he feels the Jets’ move is going to negatively affect his business.
“A sports franchise leaving a community is a huge deal," he told Nassau News. " An organization like the New York Jets creates curiosity for fans and the press. It brings people into a community and, as a byproduct, people bring money, and therefore, they spend it in those communities.”
Nick Koutoufors, an employee of Coliseum Motor Inn, also explained how its business thrives during the summer months, in particular August, when the Jets are well into their training season. He explained that the training camp attracts the press and fans from all over, who need a place to stay. “We’re gonna loose some money,” Koutoufors said.
Coliseum Caterers and the Coliseum Motor Inn are not the only two local businesses in Hempstead that are going to be affected by the move. Various industries will feel the impact of the Jet’s relocation, including restaurants, hotels, delis, convenience stores, mom and pop shops, and of course the local colleges, especially Hofstra University.
