Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs: Hofstra and the Community

According to the Nassau County Community Health Assessment (PDF), two thirds of high school students reported having had sexual intercourse by the time they reached graduation. While teen pregnancy rates have declined, there is a significantly higher risk for young women who are minorities and/or suffer from socioeconomic difficulties. From 1982 to 2002, the teen pregnancy rate decreased by 51 percent; and communities in Nassau County are looking to lower that percentage each year.

In 2002, Hofstra University joined Planned Parenthood to create a program that encourages girls in the nearby Roosevelt School District to focus on their goals, build confidence, and express their feelings through writing. The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic at Hofstra University chose to work with the seventh through twelve graders because they are seen as being at “high risk” for teenage pregnancy; as the Roosevelt school district has the one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in Nassau County.

Super Tuesday at Hofstra

Following are articles produced as part of the coverage of the Super Tuesday primary elections in the United State's presidential campaign by online journalism and photojournalism students at Hofstra University.

But this coverage was only part of the efforts of the students in the School of Communication, using the newly opened NewsHub converged newsroom. Under the leadership of The Chronicle student's newspaper news editor Samuel Rubenfeld and with Professor Mo Krochmal as executive editor and news editors Professor Peter Goodman and Professor Barbara Fischkin, Hofstra students produced live coverage of the Super Tuesday election scene at http://chronicle08.blogspot.com, and for WRHU, the Hofstra student radio station at 88.7 FM and WRHU.org.

Hofstra University Launches ‘NewsHub’

Is a Religious Approach to Sex Ed Okay for Hempstead?

"Teen Sex? It’s okay to say no way!” is a slogan used by Planned Parenthood to urge teens to make smarter choices about sex.

“There are many reasons to wait to have sex: What’s Yours?” is the slogan for the “No Sex, No Problems” campaign by the Washington State Department of Health -- an initiative to decrease the pregnancy and STD rates of teens in the state.

Why are these campaigns relative to the Village of Hempstead?
